One Year Anniversary

It was one year ago today that the Chicago Bears made the deal for Jay Cutler, sacrificing the franchise’s future for an unproven quarterback with a strong arm and little in the way of talented receivers for which to throw.

So how do YOU think it has worked out so far?  Personally, I don’t see any advancement toward a Super Bowl, and having Kyle Orton and those high draft picks back might have put Chicago in a better position to get to the next level.  I want to hear what YOU think though, so sound off in the comments!

I think this website is pre-mature. As a long standing fan where were you all when we needed to get rid of Ron Turner? Where were you all when we needed a harder push to get rid of Angelo or Smith. I think Jay should be giving a real chance to prove himself under a offensive coordinator who doesn’t call HIGHSCHOOL plays and pays attention to potential. I will blast this site until you have proof by the end of next season!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!@!!!!!!!!

And also I don’t see a big difference in wins in your comparison chart. Be a real bear fan and give you support with what we have to work with. The coach and GM are to blame for a lot. Just think back to before Cutler. They wanted to stick with that Grossman GARBAGE. If we cant look at everything then DON’T LOOK. IT’S TIME FOR YOU TO GIVE SUPPORT UNTIL MID SEASON OR THE END SO WE CAN SEE WHERE THIS SEASON IS HEADED. MY PREDICTION IS WE WILL WIN THE DIVISION THEN MOVE FROM THERE. I”LL MAKE SURE I PULL YOU OFF HIS NUTS!

Way to go Anthony. You may need a chisel and rock hammer to get this guy off Jay’s nuts after next seaon though. Orton was a stand up guy but jay has a cannon and i see this being his Home for a LONG LONG time. Get used to it.

I do support the Bears, and I hope they succeed. I just think they have a better chance of succeeding with a different quarterback and more depth everywhere else. Cutler has enough ability to win, but only if he is handed a talented team. With few early draft picks, that won’t be the Bears.

    @Brandon
Chicago probably will be Cutler’s home for a long time, but more so because of his contract than his success.

You do know that first round picks are guaranteed first round money… which is a large portion of the salary cap for players who have a significant probability of not making it in the league. Take a look at Angelo’s first round draft history (immense waste of money):

    1. Marc Colombo
1a. Michael Haynes (9th overall pick) (could have drafted Troy Polamalu, Dallas Clark or Larry Johnson)
    1b. Rex Grossman
    1. Tommie Harris
    1. Ced Benson (5th overall pick)
    2. Danieal Manning (actually 2nd rounder but first pick of that draft)
    Greg Olsen.
    Chris Williams

Of that list there are a great deal more misses than hits. In fact there is not a single Bears pro bowler on there (except for Tommie Harris for a brief period) as well as guys that did absolutely nothing at all for the Bears (Columbo, Benson, Haynes!). Couple that with our coaching staff’s utter ineptitude at developing young talent what exactly do you think we would have done with those 2 first round picks??? With those two first round picks there is NO WAY we would have signed Peppers or Taylor. The money plus heartache we saved was what allowed us to sign two of the premiere free agents from this year’s class. In essence:

    Broncos Received:

    Robert Ayers (1st round pick)
Alphonso Smith (they traded their own 1st round pick this year to pick him in the second round last year which they most likely would not have done if they did not have an additional 1st round pick)
    Kyle Orton

    Bears Received:
    Jay Cutler
    Johnny Knox
    (Peppers and Taylor)

I don’t know about you but I am more than happy with that.
Kyle Orton put up better numbers than Cutler did last year with Brandon Marshall catching short armed throws left and right and an overall significantly better line and offensive support. Look what happened to Eddie Royal: 91 catches and 980 yards with Cutler to 37 catches and 345 yards with Orton. Sheffler (549 yards with Cutler to 286 with Orton). If it weren’t for Marshall, Orton’s numbers would have been drastically different. I like Orton as a football player but he would have been massacred behind the offensive line we had last year. No way would he have played all 16 games. While obviously Cutler has to improve on his decision making, at least he has a huge potential for improvement. With Orton, he’s pretty much as good as he is ever going to be. I firmly believe that the Chicago Bears would never have won a championship with Kyle Orton as quarterback. Whether or not they will with Jay Cutler is up in the air, but at least there is a possibility.

My bad… Haynes was actually the 14th pick in the 2003 draft. He was released in 2006 and never played a down for another team. In fact I couldn’t tell you if he ever played a down of football for the bears… Not really, but really.

    Oh and one more thing

Peyton Manning (first 4 years—started from day 1)
    3739 yd 26td 28 int
    4135yd 26td 15 int
    4413yd 33td 15 int
    4131yd 26td 23 int

Jay Cutler’s first 3 years as a starter (only played 5 games his rookie year but had a 88.5 Qb rating)

    3497 yards 20td 14int
    4526 yds 25td 18int
    3666 yds 27td 26 int

Nevermind the fact that Peyton Manning had (and STILL has) the same offensive coordinator with the same offensive playbook. That means in 11 years he has worked with one playbook and one system. Cutler on the other hand has had a new offensive coordinator and a new system each and every year including this upcoming year. I don;t think that should be discounted. With the complexity and variance amongst NFL offenses I think it’s a testament to Cutler’s ability, intelligence, and work ethic (just because he looks like a pouty bitch doesn’t mean he isn’t working behind the scenes) that he has put up those kinds of numbers. Peyton developed in years and years in the same system gradually building upon his foundation of knowledge of the playbook upto the point where he basically is the current Colt’s offensive coordinator. I would like to see what Cutler could do with the same type of stability but it doesn’t look like he will be that fortunate. If the Bears bomb this year Cutler will be on coordinator/playbook #5 next year.

Did all the fans see the Denver Broncos vs. Jets this weekend? Holy cow, I think Kyle Orton and the Broncos are back on top!
